How to tell ur mom about ur period

You go to the bathroom in the morning and notice that when you flush it, the toilet has blood in it. You flush it quickly and run into your room. You look around panicking when you realize your mum has to know this at one point. You try to tell her but you're too scared.

Do This

Tell your Mom Upfront and in Person

  1. 1
Get your mom alone. It could be while she's folding the laundry or putting earrings in; it's best when she is not doing anything. Try not to do it when she's trying a new recipe in the kitchen or attempting to get your screaming little brother in the car. Pick a time when she's calm and relaxed. Also she'll have more time to answer more of questions and not have to rush.

Tell her that you have important news to share with her. Say, "Mom, I got my period" and smile to let her know you're happy by the news. This will let your mom know you're calm and are not panicked or worried. Most moms will be calm and congratulate you!

You could tell your mom the whole story, about having a bad or good day and throw that in there like no big deal. Talking fast helps, especially if you're impulsive or scared.
  • 4
If, for some reason your mom isn't there, like if she's at work, tell any adult women around or wait until your mom gets home and isn't busy.

  • 5
If your mom is always busy you can tell your aunt or even your grandma; go with girls because they have all been through this. Or if your comfortable you can tell your dad just because he's not a girl doesn't mean he doesn't know about this stuff.

  • Tips

    • If you are too scared, don't worry. If you have an older sister, ask them what she does. You could even ask your mother(Parents are an essential learning tool, in this respect).
    • You should write a note to her as a last resort, because it can be very awkward when you finally talk to her about it.
    • If you have a busy household and don't get time to talk to your mother and don't want to say in front of anyone else next time she goes shopping ask to go with her. In the car say "Mum I think I have started" you don't need to say period they understand. That way, you can buy supplies when you arrive at the shop.
    • Don't be embarrassed! All girls go through it. It is a natural thing.
    • If you want some time before you tell your mom, try to find her feminine products on your own and use one. Try looking under the sink first, then any cupboards near the toilet, and then in the bathroom closet. Most women keep them in one of these spots, and it's almost guaranteed that they'll be somewhere in the bathroom.
    • Remember to breathe and stay calm. Maybe rehearsing it in front of the mirror will help.
    • When looking for a time to do it, it's best to choose a time when you two are alone or when you usually chat. For example, when she comes to say goodnight to you, or in the car when no one else is there.
    • Don't be scared to talk to your mom or other women. If you feel you're not ready to talk to your mom yet, or can't find a time to talk to her, ask your doctor or school nurse. Remember, they'll understand, they've all been through the same thing when they were you're age.
    • Know that all moms have gone through the same thing!
    • Simply say, "Mom we need to talk".
    • Try to be calm though. Before you tell her, calm down. Take a shower, read a book, or just breathe! Also, make sure you really have it. If you're sure, go ahead. If you're not, wait a day or two. If you see it again, then congrats! *Remember though that maybe it's a good idea to show your mom so that she can make sure.

    Warning

    • It's a bad idea to tell the whole world. Tell your mom where others can't hear you, and be sure not to leave the note taped to the refrigerator.
    • It's not always a good idea to wait a day or two, or wait until your mom is calm and relaxed - every girl is different, and some girls might need feminine supplies within less than an hour of starting!

    Things You Will Need

    • Pads or tampons which ever suits you. This is the main thing!
